A butterfly or butterfly lock or butterfly lock , which is used in particular on transport boxes (so-called flight cases ), is a stable lock provided with a snap and turn mechanism.

To close a butterfly lock, a hook must first be hooked into a corresponding counterpart. Then, by turning the butterfly-shaped handle, the hook is pulled back and the clasp is closed. Due to this special construction, the locks are very easy to move, even if they have to be closed against resistance, and are protected against accidental opening.

Colloquially, they are often referred to as “catches”.

In order to be able to attach so-called pins to jackets, hats or other items of clothing or objects, so-called butterfly fasteners are often used as fasteners.
