Camaieu cut

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The camaieu print or camaieu cut is a variant of the woodcut technique in which several plates are used. The aim is to reproduce painterly effects, as achieved by washed brush drawings, with the possibilities of woodcuts. For this purpose, three to four plates are used, which are colored in one color tone in different shades (for example light brown, brown, dark brown). The first plate prints the outlines and deep shadows, the next the less dark tones, the third the mid-tones and the fourth the base color. A black-lined plate is usually not used.
