Campsie High Church

The Campsie High Church , also High Church of Campsie , is a ruined church in the Scottish town of Lennoxtown in East Dunbartonshire . The neo-Gothic building is located in the city center away from the main street. In 1973 Campsie High Church was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

The decision to build a new church in Lennoxtown was made in the early 1820s. A submitted design was described by one person as a "bulky and inelegant neo-Gothic building" and the design was then stopped. The extent to which the original design, a modification of it or a new design was finally realized is not recorded. David Hamilton was commissioned with the planning as the architect . Campsie High Church was finally completed in 1828. The building offered 1000 seats. The total cost was around £ 3,100. The bell is from the same year. The following year the roof and benches of the old, now abandoned church were sold.

Around 1983 a fire ravaged the building. An application to demolish the ruin from that year was denied. It has been on the Scottish List of Listed Buildings at Risk since 1990. During an on-site inspection in 1990, the structure was described as neglected but protected. In the meantime the church has been fenced in due to vandalism. The cost was £ 5,000. In 1993 the condition was reported to be deteriorating. Two years later, £ 161,000 was granted to stabilize the ruin. Currently, the condition is classified as ruinous but has a low probability of deterioration. Vegetation covers the interior. In the meantime the clockwork has been repaired and floodlights have been installed. Plans for further use include the establishment of a library or museum.
