The Canción , the lyric song , is one of the basic lyrical genres of Spanish literature in the Middle Ages . Originally intended for musical performance, it quickly changed into a popular form of lyric poetry. It is a comparatively short poem, the subject of which is mostly love , but which can also include religion or similar areas. Her style is characterized by an eight-syllable verse and regular, consonant rhyme, so there are only limited metrical options. As a genre, it has a great tradition both in other literary languages ​​of the Middle Ages and in Latin of the time. The Galician-Portuguese cantigas de amor in particular are considered to be their predecessors.
