The Caproni Ca.314 was a light multi- role military aircraft that the Italian manufacturer built in the 1940s.
development
The Caproni Ca.314 was developed from the Ca.313 RPB2 version , which had a tiered cockpit as the main distinguishing feature . The first production models of this version were used as prototypes for the ca.314. Due to the shape of the bow, the Ca.314 had an outward resemblance to the Bristol Blenheim , which also had a similar design and performance.
The armament was changed to two 12.7 mm machine guns , which were built into the wing roots. In addition, there was a rear-facing 7.7 mm MG in a weapon station under the middle section of the fuselage. The engines were not changed. With the stronger armament and the good flight performance, the Ca.314 could also be used for aerial combat over the sea. Here it was superior to contemporary seaplanes.
The different versions were manufactured in the factory in Taliedo . The "C" version was also produced in factories in Ponte San Pietro and Castellammare di Stabia by the manufacturer AVIS.
Versions
About 314 A was intended for sea patrols and as an escort aircraft for convoys. This version was also known as the 314-SC (Scorta). A total of 73 pieces were produced.
About 314 B was a torpedo bomber. This model could carry a 900 kg torpedo or, alternatively, a bomb load of up to 500 kg. This version was also called 314-RA (Ricognizione-Aerosiluranti). A total of 80 pieces were produced.
About 314 C was a ground fighter. For this purpose, two further 12.7 mm machine guns were mounted under the wing roots. With 254 pieces from three different factories, most of the Ca.314 were made of this version.
