The Caproni Ca.73 was an Italian airliner and light bomber .
construction
The Caproni Ca.73 was a one-and-a-half-decker and was designed in 1924 by the engineer Rodolfo Verduzio . It was the first airplane in Italy to be built entirely from metal.
It was intended to be used as a civil airliner for up to ten passengers and two crew members. The machine had a horizontal stabilizer in the form of a biplane and a wingspan of 6.25 m. Two unclad Isotta Fraschini Asso engines were used as engines. The engines had an output of 500 hp (373 kW) and were mounted in tandem on struts between the wings. The upper wing was shorter (18 m wingspan) and had no ailerons.
The machine is designed to replace the still from the military version of World War coming Caproni Ca.36 designed M.
Military operations
The first missions were flown from 1926 in North Africa in the fighting against insurgents. The Ca.73 was used in the squadrons of the Italian night bombers until 1934.
Versions
About 73bis
One version was the Ca.73bis with two Lorraine-Dietrich engines with 400 PS (298 kW). This was a bomber and basically similar. The bomber version was also made with the Asso engines and then referred to as Ca.73ter or Ca.82. The main difference was gunner positions behind the wings in the top of the fuselage and in the bow. The bomb load was a maximum of 900 kg. The fuel tanks were enlarged significantly, which increased the maximum flight time to up to 6 hours. The top speed of this version was 195 km / h and the maximum takeoff weight was 5,700 kg.
