Cargojet Airways is a Canadian cargo airline founded in 2002 . It mainly focuses on night flights, where it flies cargo between different cities at night. It is Canada's largest airline in this business segment.

history

The history of Cargojet Airways begins in 2001 when today's CEO of Cargojet Airways and businessman Ajay Virmani acquired 50 percent of the shares in Canada 3000 Cargo, the cargo business of the troubled Canada 3000 Airlines . The purchase was completed in July 2001. In January 2002, Ajay Virmani took over the remaining 50 percent of Canada 3000 Cargo, making him the sole owner of the airline. The former parent company of Canada 3000 Cargo, Canada 3000 itself, stopped its flight operations in November 2001 due to insolvency. He planned to expand and in 2002 renamed the company Cargojet Airways. This step is seen today as laying the foundation stone for the company.

In the following years the traffic numbers of Cargojet Airways grew and new aircraft were discontinued. The focus during the expansion was on night freight traffic.

On July 17, 2007, Cargojet Airways took over the cargo division of the Canadian Georgian Express Limited . Georgian Express has been active in the freight business since 1994 and at the time of the takeover served an extensive regional route network with around 10,500 flights a year with a fleet of 3 Beech 1900 freighters and 4 Cessna Caravans , also freight planes. It generated sales of approximately ten million Canadian dollars. The acquisition price was 1.4 million Canadian dollars plus payments for the fleet. After the takeover, Cargojet Airways, which also hoped for numerous synergies for its own main network through the takeover of a regional network, renamed the cargo segment taken over from Georgian Express to Cargojet Regional.

The airline's expansion continued and so Cargojet Airways took over a 51 percent stake on May 1st, 2008, and thus the majority stake in Prince Edward Air, which is active in Eastern Canada, as well as an option to purchase the remaining 49 percent in Prince Edward Air in the next three to five years. This was preceded by a press release at the beginning of the year, in which Cargojet Airways was planning to take over 49 percent of this airline in order to expand its regional subsidiary, Cargojet Regional, which is 55 percent owned by Skylink Express and 55 percent by Cargojet Airways. In May the step could then be carried out after negotiations. Prince Edward Air, founded in 1989, operates a regional cargo network with liner services in Eastern Canada, but also operates full charter cargo flights and ambulance flights. Other branches of Prince Edward Air are aircraft maintenance and trading. Together with Prince Edward Air, Cargojet Airways now has around 130 employees and 21 aircraft in operation.

In addition, a fleet modernization and expansion program started in 2008 at Cargojet Airways, which until then had only operated Boeing 727 cargo aircraft. On January 8, 2008, Cargojet Airways announced that it had concrete plans to take over two Boeing 767-200ER freighters . The first Boeing 767-200ER aircraft arrived at the base at Hamilton International Airport on August 7, 2008. A sister aircraft followed in September. Both planes had flown in passenger seating with American Airlines for most of their lives before being converted into freighters. The two aircraft were originally built in 1984 and 1985. Almost at the same time, a Boeing 757-200 in freighter configuration was taken over, which arrived at Hamilton International Airport a little earlier than the first Boeing 767-200ER on August 4, 2008. The Boeing 757-200 was delivered in 1990 and had transported passengers for numerous European airlines until it was converted into a freighter for Cargojet Airways.

The subsidiary Cargojet Regional, which includes the stake in Prince Edward Air and the former Georgian Express and previously held 55 percent by Cargojet and 45 percent by SkyLink Express , was completely sold to SkyLink Express in 2010. The sale of the 55 percent stake was completed on July 15, 2010. Since then, Cargojet Airways has only concentrated on the large aircraft business.
