Shchedryk
Shchedryk is a Ukrainian folk song that is also known as the Carol of the Bells in Anglo-American countries .
history
Shchedryk (from Ukrainian shchedryj ) was composed in 1916 by Mykola Leontowytsch (for 4-part choir). It tells the story of a swallow that flies to a man and predicts that a lot of good will happen to him in the coming spring. In the Ukraine this piece is sung for the Orthodox New Year celebrations.
Peter J. Wilhousky provided the piece with an English text under the title Carol of the Bells in 1936 , although it is not based on the Ukrainian original. Today it is one of the most famous Christmas carols in English-speaking countries. The best known version comes from John Williams from the movie Kevin - Home Alone .
