from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cartas Marruecas is a letter novel by José Cadalso . There are a total of 90 fictitious letters that were written in 1772 and first published posthumously in 1789 as a series in the Correo de Madrid and finally as a book in 1793.

The correspondents are the Moroccan Gazel Ben-Aly, who is in the wake of the Moroccan embassy in Madrid , his Spanish friend Nuño Nuñez, who accompanies him in Spanish society, and his former teacher Ben-Beley.

With the alienated view of the foreigner, the Spanish customs and ways of thinking are examined and criticized. Central points of criticism are the lack of promotion of the sciences, the useless nobility, superstition, the neglect of agriculture and the scholastic philosophy .
