The Castlestrange stone

The Castlestrange stone is on the site of the "Castlestrange House" in the townland Castlestrange ( Irish Caisleán Stráinse ) near Athleague in County Roscommon in Ireland . It is a round granite block 0.9 m in diameter and 0.6 m high, decorated with spirals in the Iron Age (between about 500 BC and 100 AD) La Tène style .

Only three other stones of this type have been found in Ireland. The Turoe Stone in County Galway and the Killicluggin Stone in County Cavan are the most famous. The intended use of the stones is unknown, but it is believed that they served religious or cultic purposes. It is stated that there was a strong continental influence in Ireland at the time, which the local carver was imitating.

The stone is a protected national monument.
