The CBI is an Indian federal police agency founded in 1941 . It is subordinate to the Union and reports directly to the government. It is comparable to the American FBI or the German BKA .

The federal structure of India means that cases are generally determined by the police authorities of the federal states , comparable to the German states . Particularly sensitive or nationally significant, transnational cases are transferred to the CBI for investigation.

The CBI is also India's official coordination point for Interpol matters. Former CBI director PC Sharma was elected Interpol Vice Director in October 2003. The acting CBI director has been Shri Vijay Shankar since December 10, 2005 .
