The Central Washington University (also CWU is called) is a state university in Ellensburg in the US state of Washington . Founded in 1891, there are currently 11,993 students studying at the university, 11,112 of them in bachelor programs. The university is best known for its Chimpanzee Research Center, the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute , and the annual Drama Teacher's Summer Institute .

The CWU sports teams are the wildcats . The college is a member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference , the football team is a member of the North Central Conference .
