The Cervejaria da Trindade (German "Bierschenke zur Dreifaltigkeit") is a tavern in the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It is located in the Chiado district in the former refectory of a medieval monastery.

The history of the restaurant

About eight hundred years ago the monastery of the Most Holy Trinity of the Trinitarian monks was located here for the liberation of prisoners. It was founded in 1294 and owed its name to the calling of the monks to buy Christian prisoners from the Moors. In 1704 it fell victim to a fire. In 1755 the monastery was destroyed by the famous earthquake and after its reconstruction it was destroyed again by a fire in 1756. In 1834, when the religious orders were dissolved, the monastery completely disappeared. In 1836 Manoel Garcia, entrepreneur from Galicia, bought the property and built the first beer brewery there in Portugal, called Fábrica da Cerveja da Trindade. Soon afterwards, the first beer tavern (Cervejaria) was built in the country. It consisted of four rooms and an inner courtyard, which was laid out exactly on the site of the former cloister. In 1863 he had the walls of the “ Ferreira das Tabuletas ” room clad with azulejos , which show allegories of the four seasons and the four elements in addition to heraldic and presumably Masonic motifs . Representatives of the bohemians , employees such as artists, politicians and writers, sat at the bar .

The city of Lisbon has had the Cervejaria in its cultural heritage register since 1986. The Cervejaria has been managed by Portugalia , Portugal's largest restaurant chain, since October 2007 . Traditional Portuguese home cooking is still served .
