Charles M. Vest

Charles Marstiller Vest (born September 9, 1941 in Morgantown , West Virginia , † December 13, 2013 in Arlington , Virginia ) was an American engineer and university professor . Vest was President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology between 1990 and 2004 .

Vest studied at West Virginia University with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1963 and at the University of Michigan with a master's degree in 1964 and a doctorate in 1967. A year later, in 1968, he became an assistant professor there and in 1986 professor (mechanical engineering). In 1989/90 he was Provost of the College of Engineering. From 1990 he was at MIT.

1974/75 he was visiting professor at Stanford.

He researched optics (optical holography, coherent optical measurement techniques), hydrodynamics (heat transport, hydrodynamic stability) and computed tomography.

At MIT, he campaigned for the advancement of women and free online access to course materials (which he also enforced).

In 1991 Vest was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 2008 to the American Philosophical Society . In 2006 he received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation and in 2011 the Vannevar Bush Award from the National Science Foundation . He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering , Fellow of the Optical Society of America (and 1982/93 Associate Editor of its Journal of the Optical Society of America) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
