Cheese curds
Cheese curds (Fromage En Grains) are processed cheese fragments that are created in the traditional production of Cheddar cheese , even before it is pressed into molds to mature. They taste mild to slightly salty, have a springy texture and squeak between your teeth when you chew. Cheese curds are therefore often referred to as squeaky cheese . They should be eaten fresh as possible so that they do not lose their characteristic squeak.
Cheese curds are a very popular type of cheese and snack in Canada and the American Midwest . In addition to French fries and a dark gravy, they are the most important ingredient in the famous French-Canadian poutine , one of Canada's national dishes. In the United States, cheese curds are often served fried. Cheese curds have been produced in Germany since 2016 and will be presented for the first time as part of the International Green Week 2017.
