Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo (Palermo)
Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo is a church building in Palermo .
The church on Via Bentivegna was started as a neo-Gothic building in the mid-19th century after the previous building from 1550 had been demolished. The architect of the new building was Domenico Marvuglia and Giovanni Rutelli is documented as the builder, both names can be found on boards next to the main portal. The upper storey of the basilica brick facade is clearly set back from the portal zone. The main portal with differently designed columns is accompanied by two smaller side portals. At the top, the lower storey is closed off by a protruding cornice. Both floors have a surrounding ring of blind arcades. The upper part of the facade is dominated by a tracery structured, flattened pointed arch window.
Red marble columns with Corinthian capitals divide the interior of the church into three naves. Walls and ceilings are lavishly decorated in the Byzantine-Norman style. The apse is adorned with the wall fresco "Christ Pantocrator " with Peter and Paul on his sides. A polychrome crucifix hangs under the organ in the entrance area.
