ChipWits is a programming game that was developed by Doug Sharp and Mike Johnston for the Apple Macintosh in 1984 .

The player used an iconic programming language called IBOL (Icon Based Operating Language) to teach a virtual robot to navigate different mazes. The game was well suited to learning the basics of programming - but it was also generally very entertaining. The reviews from that time were consistently very positive.

ChipWits has won multiple awards including MACazine Best of '85 , and MacUser's Editor's Choice 1985 Award .

The game was written in MacFORTH and ported to the Apple II and the Commodore 64 in 1985 .
