histology

The ear nodule ( chondrodermatitis nodularis helicis or Winkler's disease ) is a benign cartilage disease, which is probably a pressure ulcer, the exact cause of which is unclear. Mostly on the upper cartilage edge of the human ear , pea-sized, often very painful changes with a wall-like edge occur that can enclose a horn cone. In rare cases, the area on the inner surface of the ear is also affected. The disease was first described in 1915 by the Swiss dermatologist Max Winkler.

root cause

The cause of the cartilage inflammation is suspected to be a chronic stimulus, for example from local pressure during sleep or phone calls. The influence of solar radiation is also discussed.

therapy

Padding the affected skin area can lead to pain relief and healing. In most cases, however, permanent healing is only possible through extensive surgical removal of the affected cartilage area. A wedge-shaped area of the ear is removed and the cut edges are sewn again. Removal of the skin lesion followed by a tissue examination is also recommended because otherwise chondrodermatitis cannot be differentiated with sufficient certainty from malignant diseases such as basal cell carcinoma .
