In his work, Christoph W. Bauer ties in with literary traditions as well as the tone of modern pop culture. He often chooses personalities from literary life as godfathers of his work, as most recently in his volume of poems my love my hate my middle you (2011) the Roman poet Gaius Valerius Catullus . Guido Cavalcanti , whose work Bauer already dealt with in his prose debut Aufstummen (2004), also plays a programmatic role in this volume . In the radio play And always again Cordoba (2006), it is Ibn Hazm to whom Bauer dedicates himself, as a model for the play Miles G. (2006) he uses Miles Gloriosus by the Roman poet Plautus . At the invitation of the Literaturhaus Innsbruck, Bauer also designed several portraits, primarily of poets of the 20th century.

Bauer also sees his poetry as an attempt to continue writing on given traditions; he describes himself as poeta legens, who, while reading, finds those materials in the works of world literature that he modifies, renews, and thinks further in a distinctive tone. His most recent volume of poetry (2011), to which Niklas Holzberg contributed an epilogue, is on the one hand under the sign of the Roman poet Catullus, but also refers to pieces of music by the band Die Toten Hosen through quotations . Bauer designed his previous volumes of poetry in a similar way, in the volume supersonic published in 2005 . logbook of a journey into disappearing, he addressed death and its literary design in the history of poetry. The long tradition of fountain poems was reflected in Bauer's fontanalia.fragmente cycle published in 2003. The latter was presented to the public for the first time in 2002 in a recitation by Peter Simonischek as part of the S [PR] ING.BRUNNEN project in the arcade courtyard of Tanzenberg Castle .

In 2007, Bauer had his prose debut Aufstummen followed by the first of three books in which he deals with the history of his current place of residence, Innsbruck. Formally, Im Alphabet der Häuser (2007) also reveals a recourse to ancient traditions. In the form of a platonic dialogue , Bauer roams the eventful history of the Tyrolean capital. The murder of the Jewish businessman Richard Graubart in the November pogrom in Innsbruck in 1938 became the starting point for Bauer's book Graubart Boulevard , published in 2008 . In the story Der Buchdrucker der Medici (2009), Bauer goes on a walk through the history of book printing using a book printer from Innsbruck.

In addition to radio plays, plays, lyrics and libretti, Bauer also writes essays, columns and reviews that have been published in various newspapers, magazines and anthologies. In 2010 his first youth book Mord in Carnuntum was published in collaboration with Reinhold Embacher .
