Christopher T. Walsh

Christopher Thomas Walsh (born February 16, 1944 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American biochemist .

Walsh studied at Harvard University ( Bachelor 1965), where he worked with Edward O. Wilson , among others , and at Rockefeller University , where he received his doctorate in biology (life sciences) in 1970. He was a post-doctoral student at Brandeis University in 1972 . From 1972 he was assistant professor and then professor of chemistry and biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). From 1987 he was professor of biochemistry and molecular pharmacology at Harvard Medical School . From 1987 to 1995 he headed the Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology. From 1992 to 1995 he was President of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

Walsh studied enzymes and enzyme inhibition and antibiotic resistance. From 1975 to 1977 he was a Sloan Research Fellow . In 1979 he received the Eli Lilly Award in Biological Chemistry . In 2010 he received the Welch Award in Chemistry (for pioneering work in biological chemistry) and in 2014 the Benjamin Franklin Medal from the Franklin Institute . In 2016 he was awarded the 16th Perl-UNC Neuroscience Prize , and in 2017 the Robert Koch Medal . He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (1989) and its Institute of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1985) and the American Philosophical Society .
