Originally the ciupaga was considered a weapon, today it is also offered in souvenir shops in the Tatra region. The ciupagas are swung and pushed against each other by the dancers in the Zbójnicki (mountain robber) dance of the Gorals.

The classic ciupagas had a handle made of steel, the souvenir ciupagas had handles made of brass, often with colored inlays , or made of wood. The bars are decorated with carvings.
