Clifford D. Simak

Clifford Donald Simak (* 3. August 1904 in Millville , Wisconsin , USA; † 25. April 1988 in Minneapolis , Minnesota , USA) was an American journalist and science fiction - Author Bohemian descent. Simak is considered one of the "great masters" of science fiction and has received numerous awards within the genre.

Life

Clifford Donald Simak's parents were John Lewis and Margaret (née Wiseman) Simak, Bohemian immigrants. Simak worked as a teacher and married Agnes Kuchenberg in 1929. He remained married to her until her death in 1985 and had two children from that marriage.

Simak also changed his profession in 1929. The former teacher studied journalism at the University of Wisconsin , did not graduate and started working for various newspapers in the Midwest. From 1939 until his retirement in 1976, Simak worked at the Minneapolis Star and the Minneapolis Tribune (now the Star Tribune ). Among other things, he was responsible for the science supplement. In 1967 he received the Minnesota Academy of Science Award for his outstanding work in the service of science .

Simak died in 1988 at the age of 83 and is buried in Lakewood Cemetery , Minneapolis.

Services

Simak's first science fiction short story The World of the Red Sun appeared in Hugo Gernsback's Wonder Stories . Until 1938 Simak wrote only a few science fiction. That changed when he moved from Gernsback to John W. Campbell that same year . There he wrote some short stories that were collected as the City Cycle in 1952 in book form ( City ; Ger. When there were still people , 1964). Simak completed this cycle in 1973 with the short story Epilog . Simak's most active period is in the 1960s. During this time he wrote eight novels and a large number of short stories. It all started with the novel Time is the Simplest Thing ( The invisible barrier ). The short story Here Gather the Stars , published in Galaxy, was published as a novel under the title Way Station (English space station on earth ) in 1963 and is considered by both critics and fans to be one of Simak's best novels. More in this time falling novels include Why call them back from Heaven (dt. Business with eternity ) and The Goblin Reservation (Ger. Colony of goblins , 1969).

With the 1980 analogue story Grotto of the Dancing Deer (Eng. Grotto of the dancing game ), Simak proved that he did not yet belong to the "old iron".

Simak's stories and novels are mostly about "simple" people, farmers or small townspeople, who unexpectedly get into situations that cannot be overlooked at first. Often these people push open doors, doors into other dimensions or times. Simak's novels and short stories are characterized by humanity and subtle humor. In Clifford Simak's stories, technology is not in the foreground, even if there are many robots and other genre-typical vehicles such as dimension gates.

In 1973, Clifford Simak received the First Fandom Hall of Fame Award and his novella The Big Front Yard was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame Volume 2B ( anthology by Ben Bova ). Further awards for his life's work followed, in 1976 Simak received the Nebula Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction Writers of America for his life's work and in 1987 the Bram Stoker Award , also for his life's work. Clifford Donald Simak died on April 25, 1988 in a Minneapolis hospital. The asteroid (228883) Cliffsimak was named after him in 2003 .

Brian W. Aldiss describes Simak in his book The Billion Years Dream as follows: " Clifford Simak holds a special position in science fiction as a living embodiment of anti-urban values ​​and a kind of open-air Midwestern decency ".
