Coalition for the Transformation of Liberia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Coalition for the Transformation of Liberia ( English Coalition for the Transformation of Liberia , abbreviation Cotol ) is a political party alliance that was founded to run in the Liberian general elections in 2005.

Initially, the Cotol consisted of the Liberian Action Party (LAP), the Liberia Unification Party (LUP), the Liberian People's Democratic Party (PDPL), and the True Whig Party (TWP), which was founded in 1869 and ruled as a unity party until 1980 . The LAP and the LUP merged in 2010 with the ruling Unity Party .

In the 2005 general election, coalition presidential candidate Varney Sherman ranked 5th out of 22 candidates, winning 7.8% of the vote. He recommended his constituents to vote in the subsequent runoff election George Weah of the Congress for Democratic Change .

Cotol was, however, more successful in the simultaneous parliamentary elections, won seven Senate seats , more than any other political party or coalition, and eight seats in the House of Representatives .
