course

The CO 3 begins southeast of Durango on the route of the US Highways 160 and 550 and then runs parallel to them in the valley of the Animas River in a northerly direction. It reaches the city on 8th Avenue and leads back on Santa Rita Drive to the route of the US Highways.

history

The bypass of US Highways 160 and 550 was completed in 1982 and their old route to the entrance to Durango was downgraded to Colorado State Highway 3. The second connection on Santa Rita Drive back to the US highways opened in 2002.
