Compomer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A compomer (also: compomer) is a filling material used in dentistry and dental technology . It is a combination of glass ionomer cements and composites .

According to this composition, a compomer combines the advantages, but also the disadvantages of both filling materials. Compomers are tooth-colored (opaque) and are mainly used as an alternative to gold , amalgam or ceramic fillings when only a temporary restoration of the tooth is required, for example in the case of children's deciduous teeth . They have a higher stability than pure glass ionomer cements. Compared to composites, however, they are subject to greater wear and tear and thus a higher level of release of any allergenic components into the oral cavity . If compomers are used without adhesive technology, there is a risk of marginal gaps forming due to material shrinkage , which can lead to secondary caries .
