Conibear trap

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Conibear trap is a wire bail trap named after its inventor, Frank Conibear. It is one of the death trap and strikes in the neck or chest area of the animal, which leads to a broken neck and / or to the clamping of the main artery and windpipe .

General

The Conibear trap was first developed by Frank Conibear in 1957 and launched on the market in 1960. It is made of steel wire in various sizes to use against fox , badger , raccoon , martens , nutria , muskrat , weasel or rats , for example . It is characterized by the fact that it can be triggered both by pulling and pushing and has a particularly high clamping force.

Use in Germany

As their reliability is controversial, Conibear traps are usually prohibited. Unlike egg pulling irons, which are released by pulling the bait and selectively catch built into a catching bunker, the Conibear trap usually acts as a pass-through trap without bait on pressure when the game runs through the trap. This easily leads to injuries that are not immediately fatal - v. a. on the paws. This causes unnecessary suffering and thus contradicts the idea of animal and species protection , which plays a major role in hunting . In addition, the trap catches any animal at random.
Since dead catching devices are not generally prohibited according to Section 19 (1) No. 9 of the Federal Hunting Act, the federal states have often created more detailed regulations on usability.

Oddities

It happens again and again that there are accidents with these traps, especially when they are set up by ignorant people. The investigating officer knows or learns that it is a Conibear trap. He passes this on to the press office and the media. They translate the name to "Conibär", which from their point of view is an animal, and the trap quickly becomes a "bear trap". Something like that naturally makes a contribution much more spectacular for the reader. It happened again on April 10, 2015 in the Hamburger Abendblatt , page 26, From all over the world , here: In the bear trap - a cat bites its owner, ready for hospital .
