Copy Generation Management System

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Copy Generation Management System ( CGMS ) is a copy protection mechanism for DVDs , among other things , which allows only one generation of copies of a distribution item. Introduced for DAT technology, the process is called SCMS there . The analog variant is called CGMS-A .

With the CGMS, additional information is stored on the data carrier, which shows which parts of the content of the data carrier may be copied and how often. The prerequisite for this copy protection is that the corresponding hardware supports CGMS. If this is not the case, the additional information is ignored.
