Council for Scientific and Industrial Research
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR; German: Council for Scientific and Industrial Research ) SOE , is South Africa's central and legally anchored scientific research and development institution that was set up by the government.
The CSIR was established in 1945 by a parliamentary decision. The legal basis was later replaced by the Scientific Research Council Act ( Act 46/1988 ), as amended by Act 27 of 2014 . Its headquarters are in Pretoria . CSIR is today the largest research and development institution in Africa , which alone represents around 10% of the research budget spent in Africa. CSIR employs approximately 3,000 scientists and engineers.

- Construction industry
- Defense and security technology
- Food , biotechnology , chemistry
- Materials research , production research ( process engineering )
- Raw materials and environmental research
A well-known development of the CSIR is the ZEBRA battery .
Special research areas
- Meraka Institute (in the South African Center for Digital Language Resources ), subordinated to the national Department of Science and Innovation .
