Cubula

The Cubula , also called Piccola Cuba (little Cuba), is a pavilion in Palermo in the Arab-Norman style . It is located in the small park of Villa Napoli .

history

The Cubula was built under Wilhelm II in the second half of the 12th century. Of the many pavilions that originally adorned the part of the royal park west of the Norman Palace, in which the castles La Cuba (or Cuba Sottana, lower Cuba), Cuba Soprana (upper Cuba), Uscibene and La Zisa stood, the Cubula is the only one that still exists today. It stands about 200 m east of the Cuba Soprana in the line connecting it and the Cuba Sottana. In 1556, the historian Tommaso Fazello suggested that the pavilion served as a resting place for hunting in the royal park.

description

The pavilion has a cube-shaped structure and has a red stilted hemispherical dome , as was common in Palermo and can also be seen, for example, in the churches of San Giovanni dei Lebbrosi , San Giovanni degli Eremiti and San Cataldo . The four side walls have pointed arches with cartouche frames like the tower of the La Martorana church .
