The Cumberland Memorial

The monument has the shape of a small obelisk on a square base. On each of the four sides of the base there is a reference to a member of the Hanover royal family:

history

In 1836 Crown Prince Georg, later King George V of Hanover, who was also Duke of Cumberland , visited the island of Norderney for the first time . He liked the sea air and made Norderney one of his summer residences. On August 10, 1861, the bathing attendant Gerrelt Janssen saved the 16-year-old Crown Prince Ernst August, the eldest son of George V, from drowning and with it the House of Cumberland from extinction. This act was the actual reason for the erection of the monument.
