Dwight Douglas "DD" Lewis (born October 16, 1945 in Knoxville , Tennessee , USA ) is a former American American football player. He played as a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) with the Dallas Cowboys .

youth

DD Lewis grew up in Knoxville. He has thirteen older siblings and was named after Dwight Eisenhower and Douglas McArthur by his parents . He already played football in high school and was elected to the student selection team in his home state because of his athletic performance.

Player career

College career

In 1965, DD Lewis moved to college . He played for the Mississippi State University team in the position of linebacker. Although the Mississippi State Bulldogs were notoriously unsuccessful during his student days (they only won seven out of 30 games), he was called up to several selection games, received several athletic awards and voted All American .

Professional career

DD Lewis was drawn 159th in the NFL Draft in the sixth round in 1968 by the Tom Landry- trained Cowboys . The Cowboys had developed into a top team under Landry, their defense around well-known players such as Jethro Pugh , Rayfield Wright or Chuck Howley went down in NFL history as Doomsday Defense .

In his first four years he was initially only used as a substitute by defensive coordinator Ernie Stautner . In 1970 he was able to win his first championship title with his team. After the team won ten of 14 games in the regular season , the Cowboys beat the San Francisco 49ers 17:10 in the NFC Championship Game . In Super Bowl V , however, his team had to admit defeat to the Baltimore Colts 16:13.

In 1971 DD Lewis won eleven of 14 games with the Cowboys in the regular season and thus moved back into the play-offs . After a 14: 3 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC final, they made it to Super Bowl VI . In this game a 24: 3 win against the Miami Dolphins succeeded , with which Lewis had won his first Super Bowl.

Lewis then won the next three NFC championships and Super Bowl XII as a linebacker starter .

The Cowboys were able to win 10 of 14 games in the 1975 regular season . Lewis was able to intercept two passes from the Rams quarterback Ron Jaworski in the 37: 7 win of his cowboys in the NFC Championship Game over the Los Angeles Rams and thus achieve a gain of 20 yards . The team from Texas , however, had to defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers , who were looked after by Chuck Noll , in Super Bowl X and just lost 21:17.

In 1977 DDLewis won his second Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys. He moved with his team after twelve wins and two defeats in the regular season in the NFC Championship Game, where the Minnesota Vikings had no chance in their 23: 6 defeat. That game was followed by a 27:10 win over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XII . Lewis was in this game the quarterback of the Broncos Craig Morton behind the line of scrimmage to one case bring.

In 1978 Lewis won his fifth title in the National Football Conference . Again the Los Angeles Rams could be beaten in the NFC Championship Game. The 28-0 win over the Rams was countered by a 35:31 defeat by the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XIII . Lewis managed to get an interception in this game too. Lewis stayed with the Cowboys for another three years and ended his career in 1981 . In total, he played 12 NFC championship games in his career, of which he and his team won five.

Honors

Dwight Douglas Lewis is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame , his college sports hall of fame , the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.

Off the field

In addition to other Dallas Cowboys players such as John Niland and Billy Truax , Lewis played a police officer in the 1973 movie The Beast .

After the career

After his career, the socially committed DD Lewis worked in a management position at the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan in Dallas. He is married and has two children.
