Delivering Alien Invasive Species In Europe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Delivering Alien Invasive Species In Europe ( DAISIE ) is a publicly accessible database that collects data on biological invasions across Europe and makes it available to the general public. The information is compiled by an international team of experts supported by a network of European cooperation partners. It was funded by the European Commission's sixth research framework program.

Goals and database

The main objective of DAISIE is an inventory of all invasive species in Europe as a basis for the prevention and control of biological invasions. Information on ecology, habitat, distribution, effects and management, experts and literature references are to be compiled for the recorded species.

DAISIE currently records 12122 alien species in Europe. Species can be searched by region or name. Many species have so far only had relatively few entries, but more extensive database entries and detailed maps exist for known and widespread species.

"100 of the worst"

On the basis of 250 regional checklists available, “100 of the worst” (“100 of the worst”) invasive alien species were identified. These are animal, plant and fungus species, each of which has a significant influence on biodiversity , economy and health. This selection at European level is similar to that of the "100 of the World's Worst Invasive Alien Species", which is compiled globally by the Invasive Species Specialist Group of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).

Among these "100 of the worst" in Central Europe, for example, the tree of the gods , the ambrosia plant , the Canada goose , the Pacific oyster , the triangular clam , the woolly crab , the raccoon , the late blooming bird cherry , the common robinia and the cause of Dutch elm disease are counted.
