The motor coaches of the series DR 137 271 and 272 were experimental railcar company West wagon . After the railcars 137 160 and 161 as well as 137 162 and 163, they were built as the third railcar design with diesel-hydraulic power transmission . The two railcars were designed for the Ruhr Schnellverkehr in order to also test the diesel-hydraulic drive in this area. In contrast to the predecessor vehicles, the drive configuration of these two vehicles was revised so that a machine bogie with an axle base of 3,500 mm was achieved again. The railcars came to the DB after the Second World War , where they were given the designation VT 46 500–501 . However, the vehicles were not in use for a long time; The last vehicle was taken out of service in 1959.

history

After the 137 160 and 161 were built in the same year, in which the drive system required a machine bogie with a 4,000 mm axle base, these two railcars with a completely different drive system appeared as additional test vehicles for hydraulic power transmission at Westwaggon in Cologne-Deutz . For the planned use in the Ruhr Schnellverkehr, the vehicles were equipped for a top speed of 90 km / h, which meant that better acceleration could be expected. Just like the 137 160 and 161, the 137 094… 223 and the 156 to 159 , the vehicles were based on the so-called standard multiple units with a standard layout .

The railcars were used by the Reichsbahndirektion Essen and maintained as planned in the Reichsbahn repair shop in Opladen . The vehicles were also in regular use during the first years of the war. The equipment overview of January 14, 1941 showed both railcars in service. At the end of 1945, both vehicles were in service, the VT 137 271 at the Frankfurt depot and the VT 137 272 at the Augsburg depot . Both cars were taken over by the Deutsche Bundesbahn and designated as VT 46 500–501 . The VT 46 501 suffered a fire and was retired in 1950. The second car ran at the newly established Frankfurt-Griesheim depot until 1954 and then came to Darmstadt . During the time in Griesheim, the vehicles were used, among other things, for the express train from Frankfurt am Main to Regensburg (342 kilometers), where they alternated with the VT 30 001 multiple unit on this route. The railcar was decommissioned in Darmstadt in 1959. The vehicle was then used for a few years as a railway company car with the number 5909 .

vehicle description

The vehicle was designed in the well-known lightweight construction based on the system of standard railcars with a standard floor plan. As with the 137 160 and 161, ie for the 137 094… 223, the standard layout was rotated by 180 °. Opposite these vehicles, the 137 271 and 272 had the second class compartment in addition to the luggage compartment . The seats in 2nd class were in the arrangement 3 + 1. In the 3rd class, the seats were also upholstered and designed in the 3 + 2 arrangement. The passenger compartment was ventilated by nine air suction devices placed on the roof of the car.

In terms of the machinery, the vehicles had some changes compared to the 137 160 and 161. The cars had the Maybach GO 56 as the drive motor and another Voith transmission as the fluid transmission . Obviously, this change enabled a machine bogie with an axle base of 3,500 mm. The diesel engine was started by a light starter from Pintsch .
