DESQview

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

DESQview was one of the company Quarterdeck Office Systems developed multitasking -Aufsatz for MS-DOS - the operating system for early on Intel x86 processors ( 8086 , 80286 , and especially 386 processors ) -based PCs. In conjunction with the memory management program Quarterdeck Expanded Memory Manager ( QEMM ) to overcome the limit of the addressable memory area in early '86 systems, several programs could run stably in different windows on DOS systems.

DESQview was superseded by Windows in the 1990s because it was more expensive and did not offer a graphical user interface (GUI). Nevertheless, it has long been popular for special applications (e.g. the background operation of fax receiving software or PC mailbox programs) because of its stability and, in contrast to Windows / 386 and Windows 3.x, its rather uniform distribution of computing time.

The supplementary program Desqview Companions 1 made some programs available, such as a simple word processor, "calculator" and calendar.

DESQview / X is a graphical user interface for Desqview , which is compatible with the X Window System (X11 R5).
