The class 50.35 were converted from the class 50 freight locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the GDR.

history

At the end of the 1930s, it was thought that with the steel St 47 K-Mo they had found a suitable boiler material with which the boiler pressure could be increased to 20 bar without increasing the overall boiler weight significantly. The newly developed steel had a higher strength than the previously used steel grade St 34, but the disadvantage turned out to be the significantly poorer thermal conductivity . In the tough everyday use of the steam locomotives, the material tired very quickly, so that the boilers made with the new type of steel had to be replaced after a few years. The 50 series also initially received such boilers. Even if their condition was less critical than in other series, a replacement urgently had to be found at the end of the 1950s. The Deutsche Reichsbahn therefore had the replacement boiler 50E developed on the basis of the new boiler of the 23.10 / 50.40 series , which was given a 500 mm longer long boiler due to the different frame. It was later used to reconstruct the series 23 , 52 for 52.80 and 58 for 58.30 . Between November 1957 and September 1962, 208 class 50 locomotives received such a boiler with a mixing preheater, larger radiant heating surface and improved induced draft, which also increased their efficiency. Many machines were also equipped with Giesl ejectors . These Reko locomotives were given the series designation 50.35 and the company numbers from 50 3501 to 50 3708. In the last few years of operation, these locomotives often ran with the new 2'2 'T 28 tenders.

The machines were soon concentrated in the north-western directorates. Since the conversion to the class 50.50 oil locomotives, the use of the remaining coal locomotives has been concentrated on the Magdeburg Rbd . As a replacement for old locomotives and oil machines, they were also used again in the Dresden and Schwerin offices from the late 1970s .

The last scheduled regular-gauge steam train was driven by a class 50.35 locomotive. It was 50 3559, which was the official farewell trip on October 29, 1988, which covered one circuit from Halberstadt – Magdeburg – Thale – Halberstadt. The 50 3559 was then used as a monument locomotive at a restaurant in Liblar in the Rhineland from 1991 to 2015 , sold in 2016 and is currently in Klostermansfeld (MaLoWa Bahnwerkstatt GmbH) for the evaluation of a possible refurbishment.

Several class 50.35 locomotives, some of them operational, are owned by Deutsche Bahn AG and many museum railways and railway museums, such as , 50 3501, 50 3570, 50 3539, 50 3552, 50 3576, 50 3616, 50 3624, 50 3648, 50 3682, 50 3685, 50 3695, 50 3700 and 50 3708. The 50 3707 is in Berlin's Schoneberg in Natur-Park Südgelände , part of the former Tempelhof marshalling yard. The locomotive 50 3501 will continue to be used as a listed operational factory locomotive in the towing service, for load test drives, as a training locomotive and as a demonstration machine, and with the help of the Meiningen Steam Locomotive Association, on a voluntary basis in national special train traffic, at Deutsche Bahn AG, section workshops and maintenance of rail vehicles, in DLW Meiningen entertained and used.

DR series 50.50

Between 1966 and 1971, 72 machines of the 50.35 series received a main oil firing system. The 50.50 series was created for them to distinguish them . Since the introduction of the EDP numbers in 1970 , they had the company numbers 50 0001 to 50 0072. They were stationed in the Reich Railway Directorate in Schwerin and Greifswald and were used in heavy freight train service. Its sudden shutdown in 1981 was an energy policy decision, because at that time the crude oil prices in the Eastern Bloc had suddenly increased significantly, on the other hand it was now possible to further process the bunker oil D chemically, so that it was no longer available for locomotive firing.

In the Bavarian Railway Museum in Nördlingen , 50 0072, the last representative of this series is still operational.

After the sale by the Deutsche Reichsbahn, the locomotive 50 3666 Im RAW Meinigen was also converted to the main oil firing system and was initially given the number 50 0073 during the entire stay in the factory. On the Vennbahn , however, the locomotive continued to run with its last operating number. It was only given its correct number 50 0073 after it was sold to Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij .
