Danas (Belgrade)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Danas (Eng. Today ) is a Serbian daily newspaper that appears in Belgrade .

The first edition of Danas appeared on June 9, 1997. Since the beginning, the editorial emphasis has been on an independent reporting policy, but with consideration for the regime of Slobodan Milošević . The newspaper was targeted by the Serbian authorities through open and uncensored coverage of events in Serbia and Montenegro .

On October 14, 1998, Danas and two other news newspapers ( Dnevni Telegraf & Naša Borba ) were banned from writing by the government until further notice. The reason was "because of fear and abuse". The ban came when NATO was publicly considering the possibility of bombing Yugoslavia.

On October 20, 1998, the ban was lifted again, but only to be replaced by new draconian legislation, then known as the “Information Act”. Danas has been fined several times under this new law. As a result, there were serious considerations to discontinue the newspaper, which, however, were not put into practice.

Today "Danas" is a daily newspaper that openly and exclusively supports the Serbian opposition.
