Danny K. Davis (born September 6, 1941 in Parkdale , Ashley County , Arkansas ) is an American politician . Since 1997 he has represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Danny Davis attended Savage High School until 1957 and then Arkansas AM&N College until 1961 . This was followed by a study at Chicago State University until 1968 . He finished his education in 1977 at the Union Institute in Cincinnati ( Ohio ). In parallel to his training, Davis worked in several professions. From 1961 to 1965 he was employed by the Chicago Postal Service . Until 1968 he also taught as a teacher in the public schools in this city. In 1969 he became executive director of the Greater Lawndale Conservation Commission . From 1969 to 1971 Davis directed the education department of the Martin L. King Neighborhood Health Center and from 1975 to 1981 the West Side Health Center in Chicago.

Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . From 1979 to 1990 he was a member of the Chicago City Council. From 1990 to 1996 he was a member of the Cook County county council . In the meantime he was also a college lecturer. In 1984 and 1986 he ran unsuccessfully for the Congress . In the 1996 congressional election , Davis was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Cardiss Collins on January 3, 1997 . After ten re-elections so far, he can still exercise his mandate in Congress today. His term of office is expected to run until January 3, 2019, with the option to run for another candidate in 2018. His time as Congressman included the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the war in Iraq and the military operation in Afghanistan .

Davis served on the Homeland Security Committee and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform of which he is still a member. He is also a member of the Committee on Ways and Means . He is also the chairman of the Congressional Postal Caucus . He is also a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Progressive Caucus .
