Darius (son of Xerxes I)
Darius ( old Persian Dārayavauš ; † August 4, 465 BC ) was a member of the Persian Achaemenid dynasty in the 5th century BC. He was the eldest son and potential heir to the throne of the Great King Xerxes I and the Amestris .
479 BC In Sardis , Darius was betrothed to a daughter of Masistes named Artaynte, with whom his own father fell in love. On the night of the assassination of Xerxes I by the vizier Artabanos , he in turn denounced Prince Dareios to his younger brother Artaxerxes I as the mastermind behind the assassination attempt, whereupon Dareios was immediately executed.
