The secret principle of love is a novel by the French writer Hélène Grémillon . It was published in 2010 under the title "Le confident" and was published in 2012 by Hoffmann and Campe Verlag in German. The novel has been translated into nineteen other languages.

The young publisher Camille finds an anonymous letter among the letters of condolence after the death of her mother. In the following weeks she received more such letters. Most of the novel is made up of these letters and Camille's reflections on who the author might be and why she is getting these letters. The main subject of the letters is the surrogacy of young Annie for her friend "Madame M." and the conflicts that arise from it.

In the course of the novel, the author changes her perspective several times and in this way tells the story from the perspective of the various protagonists.
