Database administrator

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A database administrator ( DBA ) is responsible for the administration of a database management system (DBMS). The duties of the DBA include:

  • draft
  • Definition of schemes, transformations, possibly applications in the specific DBMS
  • Data protection and security through assignment of rights
  • data backup
  • Performance monitoring and ensuring the availability of agreed database functionalities
  • Optimizing performance by changing the internal scheme
  • Change of external schemes based on user requirements and application requirements
  • Change of the conceptual scheme
  • Installation and upgrade of a database or a client

Database administrator is to be understood as a role - it does not have to be a person.

Remote DBA

A remote DBA takes on all the defined tasks of an in-house database administrator, except that he usually does not belong to the in-house staff and works on site. The remote DBA connects to the respective database via remote access and works from his location. The connection is usually made via a VPN tunnel.

The remote DBA was created primarily because of the personnel bottlenecks in the IT area and is a special form of outsourcing . With the help of the Remote DBA, companies can obtain external database administration knowledge without having to have their own staff. The remote DBA can also be used to relieve the existing IT staff, to cope with workload peaks or to cover vacations.
