Monument to Franz Xaver Gabelsberger (Traunstein)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gabelsberger monument in Traunstein was erected on June 1, 1913 by the Traunstein Stenographers Association in honor of the inventor of a cursive shorthand system , Franz Xaver Gabelsberger (1789–1849).

In its present form, the monument consists of a brick base, a pillar tapering towards the top with an inscription plaque and a portrait plaque and a vase above. The location is on the roadside at the corner of Wasserburger Strasse and Obere Hammerstrasse.

When it was erected, the monument had a well with a round, low wall. In 1962 the fountain was sacrificed to road traffic. In 1980 the remaining stone pillar had to be moved for the same reason.
