The monument for the infantry regiment "von Goeben" no. 28 is a memorial in memory of the fallen soldiers of the infantry regiment "von Goeben" (2nd Rheinisches) no . The monument erected in 1930 (possibly also in 1935) is located in the courtyard of Fort Helfenstein in Koblenz, in front of the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress . After the partial destruction in 1945, only the base of the monument remains as a memorial stone .

history

The memorial was inaugurated on the Helfenstein in Koblenz in 1930 (according to another source in 1935), 50 years after the death of the Prussian general August Karl von Goeben . Units of the infantry regiment had been stationed in Koblenz since 1814, especially at the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. After the Second World War , the life-size infantryman on the base was dismantled in the summer of 1945 as part of the renovation of monuments.

Soldiers of the Bundeswehr's 142nd Panzer Grenadier Battalion stationed in Koblenz restored the remaining base in 1960. The “Friends of Koblenz City Soldiers” have been looking after the memorial since 2005.

construction

On the base of the war memorial there was originally a life-size infantryman about to throw a hand grenade . Today only the simple base is preserved as a memorial stone. Instead of the infantryman, a flame bowl was attached to the base. The front is marked with a large plaque with an iron cross and coat of arms . The following text can be read on it:

THE INF. REGIMENT
V.GOEBEN
2.RHEIN.NR.28 AND ITS
FIELD INFORMATION
1914 1918

Between the years 1914 and 1918 there is a coat of arms with the Lorraine cross .

On the right side facing the Rhine there is a relief by the sculptor von Hollweg, which shows a “dying soldier with mother”. On the left side there is a plaque with the following words:

The 28th regiment sacrificed for the fatherland:
1815 23 officers 680 men
1849 2 officers 20 men
1866 3 officers 44 men
1870/71 16 officers 231 men
1914/18 117 officers 3995 men

The back bears two more memorial plaques. The upper panel reads:

The Panzergrenadierbataillon 142 looks after this monument of the Infantry Regiment von Goeben (2nd Rhine) No. 28, whose parts are stored in barracks, in the citadel and in forts of the fortress Coblenz-Ehrenbreitstein.

The lower panel bears the following text:

On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, the Friends of Koblenz City Soldiers sponsored this monument.

This board also bears the coat of arms of the Freundeskreis with the years 1975–2005.
