Depot hack

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hack Depot is the name of a carriage design and the early automobile body derived from it . The name of the vehicle, which is usually a two-horse carriage, refers to its main purpose, namely the transport of people and goods to or from the nearest railway depot.

The Depot Hack essentially consisted of a flat, open box with a driver's seat attached to the front and a tailgate. For the transport of people (up to 7 people), benches could be mounted on the loading area. Some depot hacks had a permanent roof.

Early automobiles with depot hack superstructures served a similar purpose and their wooden superstructure was similarly constructed. It is the forerunner of the Station Wagon , of which so-called "Woodies", that is, versions with decorative wooden body elements, initially with real wood, later only as replicas, continued to exist for a long time.
