The German Colonial Warrior Association (DKKB) was founded in 1922 by Major General Georg Ludwig Rudolf Maercker as an association of numerous, smaller colonial warrior associations .

When the colonial associations were brought into line after the establishment of the (new) Reichskolonialbundes (RKB) in 1936, the DKKB was one of the few organizations that was initially able to maintain its nominal independence as a registered association under the umbrella of the Reichskolonialbund. In October 1938 he was assigned to the NS-Reichskriegerbund .

The newspaper "Kolonial-Post" appeared from January 1928 as the official organ of the association and as a sign of thanks to the colonial warriors . The editor was the federal executive director, Lieutenant Colonel a. D. von Boemcken. The newspaper was discontinued in March 1943.

In 1942 the association comprised 190 colonial warriors comradeships with around 12,000 members who, because they belonged to the German Colonial Warriors Association, were also members of the Reich Colonial Association.

The federal uniform was a khaki uniform with the protective troop hat, the federal flag the flag of the German-East African Society . A pin with a silver-colored protection troop hat was used as a badge .

Efforts to revive the Colonial Warrior Association after the Second World War led to the founding of the "Association of Former Colonial Troops" in Hamburg in 1955, which a year later merged with other regional associations to form the " Traditional Association of Former Protection and Overseas Troops ", which still exists today. united.
