The German Bee Museum Weimar shows the various aspects of beekeeping . It was founded in 1907 as the “Reich Beekeeping Museum” of the German Beekeeping Association by pastor Ferdinand Gerstung , who was also known as the “father of bees”.

description

The museum has been located in a former inn in the Oberweimar district since 1957 . In 1973 it had to be closed because of dilapidation. In 1985 the city of Weimar bought the building and land in order to resume operations in 1994 after extensive renovation. After the city gave up the bee museum again in 2003 for financial reasons, it was opened on April 1, 2005 by the Landesverband Thüringer Imker e. V. (member of the German Beekeeping Association ) reopened.

The museum's permanent exhibition, which is supplemented by changing special exhibitions, contains exhibits and explanations of biological, historical and technical aspects of beekeeping . Connections are made to other areas of human life, such as nutrition , art and folk art , religion and philosophy, politics and ecology . There is also a separate “children's route”. In addition to beehives and wagons, a bee pasture garden can be viewed outside.

The Weimar Bee Museum has the largest collection of figurines in the world. It is also a training center for the region’s beekeeping and organizes an annual bee and Advent market.

In the courtyard of the museum stands, among other things, Die Bewahrende , a bronze sculpture by Winfried Kirches. It was presented to its location in September 1991 in a "Obstallation" artistically staged.
