Diagnostic Trouble Code

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a hexadecimal code used in automotive engineering to identify malfunctions that can occur during the operation of an automobile. The Diagnostic Trouble Codes are stored in the error memories of the control units installed in automobiles and can be read out in the workshop with the aid of diagnostic devices (diagnostic testers or vehicle diagnostic systems ). The equipment required to read the DTCs usually varies from model to model. Within the scope of EOBD / OBD-2 , the general DTCs, which are the same for all manufacturers, are defined in the standard SAE J2012 or ISO  15031-6. The definition of the error codes, which differ from one another depending on the manufacturer, is up to them.
