from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography (DNZB), also known as The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography , is a New Zealand lexicon with biographies of over 3,000 significant New Zealanders who have died. Initially published only in print, biographies of New Zealand personalities are now made available to the public on a website of the Ministry for Culture & Heritage .

history

Dictionary as a book

The first edition of the Dictionary was published in 1990, published by Allen & Unwin in collaboration with the Department of Internal Affairs . It was published as Volume 1 and covered the years 1769 to 1869. The second volume, covering the years 1870 to 1900, followed in 1993. Volumes 3 and 4 followed in 1996 and 1999. Volume 5 was published in 2000 and was ultimately the last volume in print. In parallel with the English editions, the volumes were also translated into Māori and published under the name Ngā Tāngata Taumata Rau .

The " Dictionary of New Zealand Biography " is not to be confused with the two-volume edition " A Dictionary of New Zealand Biography " by Guy Hardy Scholefield , which was published in 1940 by the Department of Internal Affairs .

Dictionary as an online database

In 2002 the DNZB was presented to the public as an online database and can be reached online under its own domain address dnzb.govt.nz. The DNZB's web portal was later integrated into the Te Ara web portal and around 900 biographies from An Encyclopaedia of New Zealand from 1966 were taken over.

today

On July 4, 2011, Ngā Tāngata Taumata Rau with all biographies from 1769 to 1960 was published in Māori as an e-book and presented to the public as part of the Māori language week .

Today the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography offers, in addition to a comfortable article search, the possibility to participate in the project. The portal was placed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 New Zealand License .
