Image description

Jesus of Nazareth sits blindfolded on a low stone wall. His hands and arms are tied with a rope. A torturer stands in front of him, pulling the rope and turning his back to the viewer. Another torturer has raised his fist to punch the man who is bound and is pulling his hair at the same time. A man steps in from the right, carrying a staff in his left hand and holding back the torturer who is about to strike with his right hand. An older man has turned to him, put his hand on his shoulder and seems to be talking to him. There are three other men in the background of the picture: A minstrel can be seen on the left edge of the picture who is playing a one-handed flute while beating the drum at the same time. The younger of the two other men looks disinterested, almost serene. The third, of whom only the head can be seen on the right edge of the picture, seems to grimace.
