The three ages of women is a painting by Gustav Klimt from 1905 that symbolizes the cycle of life. Klimt was an Austrian painter of symbolism and a member of the Vienna Secession .

Provenance

The picture was exhibited in its own Klimt room at the Venice Biennale in 1910. In 1911 it was shown in an exhibition in Rome as part of the fiftieth anniversary of the unification of Italy and in 1912 it was acquired by the Italian state for the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna .

There are only three Klimt paintings in total in Italian collections. In Venice, in Ca 'Pesaro , Judith II hangs and in Piacenza, in the Galleria d'arte moderna Ricci Oddi , a portrait of a woman .

description

The work shows three female figures of different ages, which are arranged in the middle of the painting. While the figures in the foreground are painted three-dimensionally, the background is flat and striking. In terms of color, the painting can be described as a contrasting combination of cool and warm as well as desaturated and saturated colors. The contrasting colors can be clearly assigned to the figures shown. The two younger female characters are surrounded by cool colors such as blue and turquoise, which flow dynamically around the two young figures. The older figure, on the other hand, is surrounded by warm oranges, browns and reds in a more static form and somewhat obscures the other women.

The youngest figure, a child, is held by the young woman who appears to be her mother. A blue fabric is draped around their legs. They are touching and have their eyes closed. The mother has flowers in her hair that symbolize spring. Her hair is light and voluminous, unlike the old woman. Their head is tilted down and turned away. Her hand hits her head. The consequences of old age are obvious. She has sagging skin, a distended stomach, and protruding veins. Her two feet can also be seen.

Technical details

The painting was painted on a canvas using oils. It is square and has a side length of 180 centimeters. It is thickly painted, one preferred by Klimt painting. The picture comes from Klimt's so-called Golden Period, during which The Kiss and the Golden Adele were also created. During this time he used gold and metallic lacquers and many ornaments can be seen in the pictures. The painting is kept in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome.
