Dieter Pioch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dieter Pioch is a former German canoeist.

Career

Pioch comes from Bavaria. In the German Touring-Kajak-Club Munich he devoted himself from early youth to canoeing, which he practiced mostly together with his partner Roland Schindler (1953-2017) in the discipline of two-man Canadians. Since his achievements justified it, he and his partner were used in national competitions early on. He soon belonged to the top canoeists in the C II class. Between 1973 and 1977 he won the German championship in two-man Canadians five times.

These successes led to Pioch and Schindler being used in international competitions since 1973. They achieved 4th place in their discipline when they were first used at the 1973 World Championships. The first peak of his career was in 1975. He and Schindler reached 1st place and thus became world champions in canoeing two-mans. Both of them were able to repeat this success at the 1977 Canoe World Championships and thus become world champions and gold medalists for the second time.

Federal President Walter Scheel awarded both of them the silver bay leaf for winning the world championship in two-man Canadians in 1975.
